CHERRY HILL – September 13, 2006 –Roman Catholic and Jewish
clergy/educators will focus on the use of sacred space by Muslims,
Roman Catholics, and Jews as part of the South Jersey Catholic-Jewish
Commission’s Institute for Understanding Fall Semester.
The Commission, South Jersey’s principal forum for Catholic-Jewish
interfaith dialogue, announced its Fall 2006 symposium series, part
of an educational effort inaugurated in 1995.
Classes for the Fall Semester 2006 will start Wednesday, October 11,
2006 at 7:00 p.m. with a discussion panel composed of speakers from
each religion. In subsequent weeks, the program will include tours
of houses of worship as follows:
October 18: **SCHEDULE CHANGE: Temple
Emanuel, 1101 Springdale Road,
across from the JCC, not at Congregation Sons of Israel as originally
scheduled.
October 25: Christ
the King Roman Catholic Church, 200 Windsor Avenue, Haddonfield
November 1: A Muslim mosque (location to be announced).
The first session on October 11 will take place at the Jewish Federation
of Southern New Jersey’s Cherry Hill campus. In subsequent weeks,
the Institute participants will visit the houses of worship for the
sessions.

“The robust interfaith dialogue between the Catholic and Jewish Communities
engenders curiosity and interest about sacred spaces and worship furniture, and
the substantial trust built through dialogue with our Muslim neighbors has led
us to create an additional opportunity for attendees to learn about Muslim sacred
spaces as well,” said Rabbi Lewis John Eron, Ph.D., Jewish Community Chaplain,
and a leader of the Catholic-Jewish Institute, which sponsors the programming. “We
are especially pleased to be able to explore the ways our faith traditions
employ physical space to enhance the spiritual experience of worship. The
institute enables us all to learn more about the practices and traditions
of our neighbors of other faiths.”
Attendance at the classes leads to two-year and four-year certificates
in Jewish Catholic Relations, through an arrangement with LaSalle
University. Participants may also be able to earn continuing education
credits in New Jersey, pending approval.
The Catholic-Jewish Commission worked closely with the Roman Catholic Diocese
of Camden and the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation
of Southern New Jersey to create the certificate program.
The program includes a series of lecture/discussion sessions. Participants
must attend at least 16 of the programs to qualify for the Certificate. Under
normal circumstances, a student can complete the certificate in two years.
All members of the community are welcomed to participate in all programs
sponsored by the Catholic-Jewish Institute of Understanding. Those who wish
to receive the certification are required to attend 16 sessions. Under normal
circumstances, a candidate will be able to complete the certification process
in two years. Since this is a continuing program of two semesters of four
sessions each year, certification should not take more than three years.
Continuing education credits for teachers will be available for students
enrolled in the certification program.
Participants can register on a per-semester or per-session basis.
